Cabinet reshuffle will destroy party, says Umno deputy permanent chair

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's decision to axe his Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from Cabinet will soon destroy the party, its deputy permanent chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Aziz (pic) has warned.
Mohamad told The Star that Najib would be blamed if Umno fell, as he was responsible for removing Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal from the Cabinet.
Mohamad reminded Najib that he commanded the party due to support from the grassroots, just like Muhyiddin and Shafie.
“I do not know what kind of advice Najib received but now he must live with the consequences,” Mohamad was quoted as saying.
He said Najib was wrong to have sacked Muhyiddin and Shafie, even though both had questioned the scandal-hit 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Mohamad said Najib should have realised Umno's survival was more important than 1MDB.
He also defended Muhyiddin's criticism of 1MDB, saying it was neither an attack on the government or the party.
“Was it wrong for an Umno deputy president to talk about an issue that has been worrying the rakyat? Najib should know what is more important – 1MDB or the survival of Umno,” he added.
“1MDB has caused havoc within the party and frankly it is quite sad to see what is happening in Umno."
Former information minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin said Muhyiddin would likely be sacked as Umno deputy president.
He said the Umno supreme council in its meeting this Friday would support the move, as Muhyiddin had violated party rules.
"Will Muhyiddin be present to defend himself during the supreme council meeting the way (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim was when Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) wished to sack him?" wrote Zainuddin on his blog yesterday.
Yesterday, Najib purged his Cabinet of dissidents and appointed new ministers that would back him as prime minister, amid an ongoing investigation into 1MDB as well as news reports that he was allegedly implicated in a corruption scandal.
