ANTI-NAJIB PROTESTS BEGIN: Students demand PM clears his name or dissolve Parliament
Some 30 students today held a demonstration against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to demand that he clear his name over allegations that nearly US$700 million ended up in his bank accounts.
The group, who refer to themselves as Gerakan Mahasiswa Selamatkan Malaysia (GMSM), held the protest in front of the Sogo shopping centre, Kuala Lumpur.
By-standers were also encouraged to sign a large banner urging Najib to step down.
The hour-long protest, peppered with cries of "long live the students" and "Najib must step down", began at 2.30pm and drew teh attention of curious weekend shoppers on the last weekend before Hari Raya.
Police presence was light, with only a handful watching over the protest.
GMSM chairperson Lukman Nul Haqim Zul Razali in his speech urged Najib to explain the allegations against him.
"If he cannot, then he should dissolve Parliament and return the mandate to the rakyat," he said.
Man unhappy with protest
On June 3, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Malaysian investigators had traced nearly US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) to Najib's personal accounts.
Najib has yet to deny this but stressed that he never used government funds for personal gain. He has said that he would initiate legal proceedings against WSJ.
However, WSJ has stood by its report and stressed that the allegation was based on documents sourced from Malaysian investigators.
As protesters were wrapping up, a man in red confronted the students for demanding for the premier's ouster.
"What you are doing is wrong, if Najib resigns, who do you think is qualified to be prime minister?" said the person.
There was no untoward incident. The disgruntled man left the scene soon after making the remark. - M'kini
