Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he accepted the prime minister's decision to drop him from the Cabinet line-up saying it was his prerogative, but vowed to continue the Umno struggle as its deputy president.
In his first statement, which was only released on Facebook, hours after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced his removal, he said could accept the fact that he may have been sacked due to his stand on the debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Muhyiddin said that while he was always supportive of Najib's leadership and all the government policy, he held a different view when it came to 1MDB.
"If it is because of my stand on this issue that caused me to be dropped, then I accept it wholeheartedly," he said in his post, that has so far garnered more than 16,000 likes.
He also stressed that he will remain loyal to the party's struggle and carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him with the aim of bringing back the confidence of Malays to the party.
"As Umno deputy president, I will continue to carry out the trust given to me and offer my services in the aim of strengthening the party and returning the confidence of Malays and the nation to Umno.
"I leave it to Allah," he wrote.
Najib announced today the removal of Muhyiddin as his deputy, calling it a "difficult decision" but one he had to make to ensure that the Cabinet operated as a collective unit.
Over the weekend, during a speech at the Cheras Umno division meeting, Muhyiddin had said that Najib must explain claims in The Wall Street Journal reports about US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) deposited into the prime minister's personal accounts and also the RM42 billion debt accumulated by 1MDB.
