TREMOR IN JOHOR UMNO: More to resign in protest against Najib

TREMOR IN JOHOR UMNO: More to resign in protest against Najib
KUALA LUMPUR - Former minister Zainuddin Maidin sees deeper reasons underlying the sudden resignation of Johor Umno Youth’s Khairul Anwar Rahmat, and believes more problems lie ahead for party leader Najib Razak.
He said Khairul may have claimed personal reasons as being behind his decision, but circumstances leading to the move showed a deeper reason.
“More questions will arise from Khairul’s resignation from all positions in Johor Umno,” Zam said, anticipating other resignations in Khairul’s wake.
He said Khairul was an influential figure respected by Johor Umno Youth members.
Khairul organised the Nothing2Hide forum on the troubled government company 1Malaysia Development Bhd earlier this month, to allow Najib to answer public queries on the company. He had also been expected to face his fiercest critic, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Police intervened to stop the forum and Najib did not turn up, later citing police advice on security grounds. Khairul later blamed a Najib aide for preventing the prime minister from attending.
Khairul had said a meeting between Najib and Mahathir would have defused the tension between the two leaders.
Zainuddin said Khairul’s exit under such circumstances would make things worse for Najib.
Khairul, a lawyer, cited business reasons in a statement today to explain his resignation. He said he wanted to focus on building up the operations of his company, Khairul Group, into the Middle East and Europe. - FMT
