KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC strongman S Samy Vellu made a surprise appearance at the second of two “special assemblies” called by MIC rivals at Putra World Trade Centre.
Thousands of supporters of deputy president Dr S Subramaniam packed the Dewan Merdeka in a show of support for the challenger to party president G. Palanivel, who had called a “solidarity gathering” there yesterday.
Among those on stage were Subramaniam’s allies, among them vice president S. Saravanan, P. Kamalanathan, Perak Speaker S.K. Devamany and the rest of the central working committee.
Subramaniam and 13 others in the central committee had been suspended by Palanivel earlier in the week, but in response the deputy president had declared himself as acting president, ostensibly on the grounds that Palanivel had acted illegally in contravention of directives from the Registrar of Societies.
The two rival assemblies this weekend come in the wake of the Registrar’s orders for fresh elections to be held for all main positions in the party leadership. Palanivel has challenged the orders in court, and is awaiting the outcome of an appeal to the courts’ rejection of two applications to overturn the Registrar’s directives.
Yesterday, Palanivel blamed Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak for the power struggle in the party, to which Najib responded today by saying the MIC president should not blame others for the party’s problems.
Barisan Nasional secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor added pressure on Palanivel today by saying he should take responsibility for the power struggle and not blame others. “We will not tolerate that,” he said in a statement here today.
He said Palanivel must hold party elections based on the 2009 membership of the central working committee and the delegates list of 2012 as directed by the Registrar. “The courts agree, and that is what Palanivel must do,” he said.
Palanivel said yesterday that branch elections would be held from August and fresh elections to all posts would be completed by the year’s end.
