Sabah has cancelled its Tadau Kaamatan or Harvest Festival open house at Ranau – the town nearest to the epicentre of yesterday's 5.9 magnitude earthquake – scheduled for Monday and declared it a day of mourning for those killed during the quake on the state's famed Mount Kinabalu.
Eleven people are dead and the fate of another six climbers and guides are still unknown.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman announced the cancellation and the day of mourning at the Kinabalu national park in Kundasang, where rescue operations on foot had been launched to rescue climbers stranded on the mountain after the quake.
He added that the priority now was to bring the dead and the survivors down the mountain.
Flags at all government offices – state and federal – and their agencies have been ordered to be flown at half mast on Monday, Musa said, as a sign of respect to those who have died.
“We feel sad and are filled with sorrow over the deaths, many of whom are tourists,” the chief minister said, adding that things in Sabah should be returned to normalcy as quickly as possible.
As such, all government agencies, particularly those in rescue and emergency services were to be prepared and on standby.
Meanwhile, search and rescue operations continued this afternoon using helicopters.
Among the agencies involved are the Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defence Department, and the army.
All the officers from various agencies are gathering at the Timpohon entry point, located at the foot of the mountain.
The Malaysian Insider understands that the search and rescue mission could not use helicopters earlier today because of foggy weather around the mountain.
Several aftershocks were also reported by the Malaysia Meteorological Department, including two this afternoon at 11.52am and 1.45pm respectively.
The first one, at 2.7 magnitude, took place some 16km from Ranau, Sabah, and the second aftershock, 4.5 on the Richter scale, took place 25km from the same town.
Tremors were felt from Kota Kinabalu up until Kota Belud.
