Religious zealots would prefer Farah in sarong

YOURSAY ‘Tahniah Cik Farah. Ignore the critics. You have done the country proud.’

Gold medallist gymnast draws flak over outfit

Lamborghini: Malaysia is sliding backwards and downwards into Talibanism. The things that the narrow-minded religious types are saying and doing is getting more and more ridiculous with each passing day.

Where will all these rules and regulations lead us? Instead of sharing in the proud achievement of a talented young Malaysian, she is being ostracised. Enough is enough.

CQ Muar: At the rate some Muslims are behaving, there will come a day no Malay Muslim girls will ever be able to participate in any sports.

Even a rare feat like winning a gold medal for her performance in gymnastic in the SEA Games is not spared owing to her outfit, which is standard attire for the event.

What do you expect her to wear - a sarong and headscarf?

Mah Kau Fan: It is not easy to be a champion. In fact, it is not possible without hard work and sacrifices. National gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, thanks for doing the nation proud.

Pay no attention to those complaining about your ‘aurat’, they are all ‘rats’ if you ask me. They are jealous at another's success, they live a life of an non-entity and in ignominy.

Kudos to your parents, too, for they must have supported and encouraged you to such great achievements.

Worried Sick: Are closet sex perverts running this country? A beautiful and talented Malaysian is bringing honour to our country and all they can think of is how she is dressed.

She is dressed the way she is because her sport necessitates it. Oh my god, who are these morons?

To Farah, I say, "Go, girl, go! You are such an inspiration to so many girls who are our hope for the next generation. We love you!"

Kilgore: It is only sick, small-minded people who think and protest like this. Normal, intelligent people are amazed at this young lady's incredible work, dedication, and accomplishments.

It is doubly wrong that these complainers try to steal Farah's pride and glory, when they have clearly accomplished nothing in their own sad lives. Farah, you are awesome.

Negarawan: Farah, you have indeed done well for the country. Do not let the religious hypocrites bother you. A person's faith is in the heart, not in one’s sports attire.

Azhar: Tahniah Cik Farah. Ignore the critics. You have done the country proud.

If we were to follow what they say, it’s time for women to say goodbye to sports. They might as well as ban women from sports. They will just have to cover up and stay at home.

Say no to Arabisation of sports in Malaysia.

Caripasal: I challenge Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to charge Farah in Syariah Court and send her to jail, the home minister to withdraw her passport for bringing shame to country, and the National Sport Council to return the gold medal and ban her from participating in gymnastics for life.

Swipenter: Covering up their women folks have made many men sex crazy. They work themselves into a sex-crazed holier-than-thou machine just seeing a bit of flesh.

Instead of rejoicing and appreciating her talents and hard work, these narrow-minded and insular folks attack her dressing. Should she wear a ‘tent’ instead of leotards when competing in her chosen sports?

Farah, you have done very well for the country and yourself. We are very proud of you and your achievements. Don't let those idiots get to you. These idiots should take a hike and go fly kites.

Anonymous_1421806811: Firstly, I would like to congratulate Farah for her success. Every right-minded Malaysian is proud of her.

Secondly, I sincerely hope she will not be intimidated by the selfish and ignorant morons who have no appreciation for anything that does not conform to their tastes.

They are perhaps jealous of her success and can only accept those who are as narrow-minded as they are. Thirdly, please continue the hard work.

Justine Gow: I don't see why women should be deprived of the opportunity to participate in sports like gymnastics just because some men cannot control their sexual urges on seeing uncovered arms and legs of women.

This 10-year-old BBC article on women and sports in Iran may have some bearing here.

Fair Play: The truth is this - when you look at a partly-clad person, you have a pretty good idea about the covered part.

But when you have a person fully covered like inside a sack, that's where the imagination runs wild and might lead to very unpleasant incidents.

Abasir: I guess it is unfortunate that gold medallist Farah Ann has Abdul Hadi in her name - the very sound of which triggers frothing in the mouth, the uncontrolled twitching of scraggly hairs on the chin and involuntary movements elsewhere beneath unwashed robes.

Pictures of her may call for an emergency meeting of the mullahs, the drafting of a new fatwa and Road Transport Department (RTD) ordering a new batch of sarongs.

Anonymous_Puduku: Where was the RTD guard when this event took place? -Mkini
