KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak is said to be making another trip to Sarawak tomorrow, amidst speculation that he wants to persuade Sarawak leaders to hold quick state elections, which are due by August next year at the latest.
He is said to be relying on Sibu-based businessman Bustari Yusuf, brother of works minister Fadillah Yusuf, and the main beneficiary of the recently-announced Pan-Borneo Highway.
The Sarawak Report blog, in a recent speculative article, said a last-minute surprise visit to Sibu had been arranged for the prime minister’s visit, with a big public rally included.
The report said Bustari had become Najib’s closest ally and holiday companion in recent years, as well as a key ally of chief minister Adenan Satem.
Sarawak Report said Bustari would fund the rally, which would be organised by his ally, Annuar Rapaee, the assemblyman for Nangka.
The report said “the mega-rich Bustari” was one of Taib Mahmud’s key henchmen as treasurer of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera, and was now never far from Najib’s side.
It said Najib was trying to push chief minister Adenan into calling an early election in order to bolster his own standing in the peninsula, where he has been under attack for months over the affairs of the debt-ridden government company 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
It said Najib wished to capitalise on the disarray in the Pakatan Rakyat from internal squabbling, and weak state of opposition parties in Sarawak to secure a victory for the Barisan Nasional.
However the strategy would depend on Adenan, who became chief minister a year ago when Taib stepped down, and has tried to put on the mantle of reformer, to erase the image of years of corruption under the previous governments.
At a Gawai event yesterday, Adenan said his one year in office was not enough to overcome years of neglect, and asked for support to obtain a five-year mandate of his own.
