The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been told to review its  decision not to investigate the startling allegation of 1MDB indirectly funding BN's 13th general election campaign.

"It is surprising that the PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed has decided that PAC would not investigate the issue," said DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang in a statement today.

Nur Jazlan has claimed it was premature to claim wrongdoing about Genting Plantations’ US$10 million (RM37.5 million)  donation to a Barisan Nasional-linked charity, Yayasan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (YR1M) which was allegedly a conduit for  election funds.

The DAP parliamentary leader criticised Nur Jazlan for being 'naive' in saying that  Genting Plantations could have made the donation for a variety of reasons including corporate social responsibility (CSR).

This is because Genting Plantations' parent company sold a power plant to 1MDB for five times its actual value for RM23 billion when the plant was only worth RM400 million, pointed out Lim.

Last Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that 1MDB had bought Genting Group’s power assets at an inflated price, and the group then made substantial donations to the 1MDB-linked charity Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M).

YR1M had then allegedly helped bankroll BN’s 13th general election campaign and is now funding social programmes in Sarawak where state elections are widely anticipated.

"PAC will be seriously remiss and negligent of its parliamentary duties to uphold probity and integrity in the  handling public funds if it ignores the prima facie case of grave impropriety in expenditure of public funds used for election campaign," said Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP.

'Soft spot' for WSJ?

Thus, PAC must get to the bottom of the case, he emphasised.

"It is most intriguing that the Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has maintained a deafening silence in the past six days," he said.

Najib Razak should have no qualms about instituting legal proceedings against Wall Street Journal as he had already sued both opposition MP, observed Lim.

The veteran politician was referring to the defamation suit brought against DAP Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and PKR Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli over their statements on the 1MDB scandal.

Lim (photo) asked whether Najib had a 'soft spot' for the Wall Street Journal in that he was prepared to be defamed without wishing to clear his reputation.

"It has been estimated that of the RM18 billion paid by 1MDB for 15 power stations, there was an overpayment of at least RM3 billion," he said.

"Where has this RM3 billion of 1MDB ringgit disappeared to? These are the answers the public would expect the PAC to ferret and find," demanded Lim.
