HOW STUPID IS THIS? Putrajaya pays RM222 mil a year to rent Proton cars
The government is paying RM221.66 million a year to private company Spanco Sdn Bhd to lease 10,963 Proton cars for the use of its officers.
The government has rented seven models of Proton cars at the rate of RM973.84 to RM3,288.84 a model a month, the Finance Ministry said in a written reply to Parliament.
"A total of 10,983 units of vehicles have been rented by the government at present,” the moment," the ministry said in reply to Teo Kok Seong (DAP-Rasah, photo) in the reply that is dated June 10.
This list includes 486 units of Perdana 2.4 Executive at a monthly rental of RM3,284.84 a car, 709 units of Perdana 2.0 Standard (RM2,892.32 a car a month) and 2,127 units of Inspira 2.0 (RM2,147.68).
Three models of mid-range cars used by the government are Persona (442 units, at RM1,114.66 a car a month), Preve (3,518 units, RM1,572.77) and Proton Waja (2,466 units, RM1,296.85).
Proton Saga rented at RM974 a month
The government is also renting a total of 1,061 units of Proton Saga at RM973.84 a car a month.
This means the government is paying Spanco RM18,472,160 in rental per month for all the cars, which works out to RM221.66 million a year for car rentals alone.
The price of a Proton Inspira 2.0 ranges from RM84,841 to RM92,062, according to the price list shown on the Proton website, while the government forks out RM25,772 a year to rent this model.
Teo asked the government to state the total number of vehicles rented out since 1993, the models used and monthly rental paid.
Spanco has signed a 25-year lease agreement with the government, which will expire on Dec 31, 2018.
Under the agreement, Spanco is responsible to supply, maintain and repair all cars leased by the government. - M'kini
