Dr M will find ways to topple me, even without 1MDB, says Najib

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is using 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) as an excuse to topple a serving prime minister, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak today, in retaliation against the incessant attacks against him by the former prime minister.
Writing in his blog, the prime minister said the continuous attacks against him was because he refused to adhere to Dr Mahathir's demands.
"Many people are asking – what motivates Dr Mahathir to make these attacks on a serving prime minister? The answer is: he wants me to resign, as he previously wanted Tun Badawi to resign, because I refused to implement his personal demands," Najib said in referring to his predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was also attacked by Dr Mahathir.
"Dr Mahathir’s attacks in reality are not motivated by 1MDB. He is just using the company as an excuse to try and topple a serving prime minister. If 1MDB had never existed, Tun would find another reason."
Dr Mahathir has been a staunch critic of the state investment arm which has chalked up RM42 billion in debts in a span of six years since its inception.
He openly and repeatedly called for Najib to quit over the issue, saying the problems surrounding 1MDB could be resolved if the prime minister stepped down and allowed a full probe into the company.
Najib said he would not resign. In his latest posting, he accused Dr Mahathir, who was his supporter, of making “insinuations, speaking half-truths, cracking misleading jokes and twisting statements to make his views exciting and palatable”.
Najib today said he refused to quit as it was his duty as Malaysia's democratically elected prime minister to lead the country and do what he believed was right for an entire nation, instead of just for one man.
"I do not believe the people want a former prime minister to rule by proxy," he said.
He also accused the retired statesman of creating a crisis by "recklessly" claiming RM42 billion was missing from 1MDB and for saying the state investment vehicle's financial assets worth RM16 billion were worthless.
Such claims, he said, are false and have created unnecessary panic, and because Dr Mahathir is a former premier, his allegations have negatively influenced the market and public sentiments.
"Had Dr Mahathir stuck to the facts and made clear that the RM42 billion is in fact debt, then it would be a different story. This is because a company generally has to have assets of a higher value to provide collateral against its debts.
"In the case of 1MDB, the RM42 billion debt is backed by RM51 billion assets as at the 2014 financial closing. But he chooses to ignore this.
"It is wrong for Dr Mahathir to falsely allege that RM42 billion, or RM27 billion as he later changed the figure to, is 'missing'.
"After 1MDB disclosed the whereabouts of the RM42billion, Dr Mahathir then said some billions were lost. This shifting of numbers and arguments casts serious doubt on his claims," Najib said.
If Dr Mahathir genuinely wanted answers to his questions, he just needed to be patient and wait for the conclusion of the ongoing multiple probes into 1MDB by the auditor-general, Bank Negara and the Public Accounts Committee, Najib added.
Najib said Dr Mahathir did not seem to have faith in these institutions and the proper lawful authorities, or were interested in their answers.
"It is a shame that Dr Mahathir has, yet again, turned against the leadership of his own party. These public attacks will only harm Umno, the government and ultimately Malaysia. This unbecoming behaviour will be an unfortunate postscript to his legacy," he said.
In a swipe against Dr Mahathir who had earlier predicted that the ruling Barisan Nasional pact would lose in the next general election, Najib said a single individual did not have the right to speak for the entire voting public.
He said BN could still win since its rival, the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, was currently in chaos and given their different ideologies, he predicted that there would be national paralysis if they took over Putrajaya.
"If we in BN stay united and prove ourselves worthy over the coming years, I have faith that the public will prove Dr Mahathir wrong at the next election – once it’s understood that his allegations are false and motivated by self-interest, not Malaysia’s interest," he added.
