KUALA LUMPUR: Leftover food will be turned into compost next year, according to the Mayor, Ahmad Phesal Talib.
He said the initiative was City Hall’s last resort for dealing with food wastage which has reached a critical level.
“I hope the food wastage problem can be resolved next year by processing leftover food into compost,” he told reporters when handing over food for ‘iftar’ or buka puasa to more than 30 City Hall traffic staff here today.
The compost could be used by DBKL to enrich the soil and reduce expenses.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that Malaysians wasted some 270,000 tonnes of food during Ramadan.
The amount of wasted food could be served to 180 million people, almost six times the population of this country.
