WAS THERE AN UMNO CONSPIRACY? Sirul had 'RIGHT' to leave country - Zahid
PETALING JAYA - Sirul Azhar Umar, one of the two found guilty in the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, left Malaysia for Australia legally because his name did not show up on the Immigration authorities’ suspect list, explained the Home Minister in a written reply in Parliament today.
Zahid Hamidi explained that based on the Immigration Act 1959/1963, Immigration authorities did not have the legal right to stop an individual from leaving the country as long as their names did not appear on their list of suspects.
He also clarified that Sirul had obtained the court’s permission to leave the country before and not after the verdict of guilty was passed on him.
Zahid said this in reply to a question by DAP’s Kasthuriraani Patto, the MP for Batu Kawan who enquired how Sirul, who had been sentenced to death by hanging, had slipped past the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Immigration authorities and the Home Ministry to make his way to Australia where he now lives in a detention centre.
The case of Sirul and his accomplice, Azilah Hadri has gripped the nation since the murder in 2006, for which they were both found guilty by the Shah Alam High Court, then acquitted by the Court of Appeal, only to be found guilty again upon the prosecution appealing the verdict. - FMT
