PAS has drawn out the hudud card in Rompin ahead of polling for the parliamentary by-election tomorrow, saying that an additional seat in the Dewan Rakyat would help them enforce the Islamic law.
Vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in his campaign speech in Muadzam Shah, Pahang, yesterday said a PAS win in Rompin would help its efforts to implement the law of Allah.
"Just imagine if your MP votes in Parliament to implement the law of Allah," he told a 3,000 strong crowd of PAS supporters.
Former PAS candidate for Rompin, Noridah Salleh said that an increase in the number of parliamentary seats for the Islamist party was crucial in allowing hudud to be implemented and also to strengthen the position of Islamic law in the country.
"We need PAS MPs because we want to strengthen Islamic law in Parliament, to strengthen the position of the Islam in Malaysia," she said last night at the
Himpunan Derita Rakyat (Hindar) 2.0 gathering.
"Our president will table a private member’s bill in Parliament," she added.
The gathering, organised in conjunction with PAS's by-election campaign, attracted some 3,000 supporters who gathered before mahgrib prayers and lasted until midnight.
Pasir Mas MP Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz also reminded supporters to vote for the PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad as the increase in the number of parliamentary seats was important for the party.
"I hope voters will give us their vote, not just in the interest of our constituency, but to send one of our people to Parliament, in the interest of Malaysia.
"This representative will ensure a better future for Malaysia, to correct old laws and to make new ones," he said in his campaign speech.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had on March 18 sent a notice to the Dewan Rakyat on a private member's bill to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
The move would allow Hadi to table the bill to amend the act, paving the way for certain categories of punishments under hudud to be implemented in Kelantan.
On March 19, the Kelantan legislative assembly unanimously passed the Shariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993 (Amendment 2015).
Nazri, in his speech last night, said if voters in Rompin gave him their mandate, the effect would not only be felt in Rompin but throughout Malaysia.
"As the candidate entrusted by PAS, I appeal and hope that all eligible voters will not miss this opportunity to carry out this great responsibility.
"The impact will only be felt among the people of Rompin, but all Malaysians."
Following the insistence by PAS to implement hudud, DAP affirmed its commitment to the Pakatan Rakyat coalition partner, but announced it was cutting off ties with Hadi.
