Nizar: Comments weren’t specifically about paedophile

MARA Council member was speaking in his personal capacity and he had been misquoted by portal with ‘own agenda’.
Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, Nizar Hussin Akhtar Hussin
KUALA LUMPUR: MARA Council member Nizar Hussin Akhtar Hussin, roundly lampooned in the media recently for statements attributed to him in the wake of the conviction of child pornographer Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, today hit back at the media for twisting his statements.
In his written statement, Nizar claimed that he had been misquoted by an unnamed news portal and that the comments which he had made were said in his personal capacity and not on behalf of MARA.
He expressed regret that they have been portrayed as comments from MARA itself.
Remarkably, Nizar also appeared to accuse his interviewer and the portal of advancing their own agenda which he said may have been in defence of Nur Fitri.
He claims that he has warned the portal to correct its report, failing which he would be forced into further action.
Nizar then went on to set out his own version of the interview, which we reproduce in full below, as translated by FMT:
Q: What is MARA’s position on the Nur Fitri issue?
A: I am not authorised to comment for MARA on any issue. Only the President and the Director-General are permitted to do so.
Q: Was the matter discussed among board members?
A: Yes there was some discussion, but only unofficially. Let those who are authorised make a statement on it. I cannot comment on our discussions.
Q: It is possible that MARA will give the student a second chance?
A: I cannot comment. If you want my personal opinion, I can give that, but not on behalf of MARA.
Q: What is your personal opinion on the Nur Fitri issue?
A: My personal opinion is that everyone will make mistakes. I do not want to talk about the Nur Fitri issue specifically but only in general. If a person makes a mistake while he is still young like playing truant in school, being absent from class, stealing etc, and if he later expresses remorse, then it is our responsibility to help that person so that his future is not wasted.
Q: In Nur Fitri’s case, what is your view?
A: I believe he deserves a second chance for his own future. Everyone makes mistakes.
Q: Will MARA grant a scholarship or sponsor his further education overseas?
A: That I do not know. You would have to ask the Director General or the senior management of MARA. I believe MARA will look into each issue carefully and make the best possible decision.
Q: Will MARA sponsor him locally?
A: I cannot comment as there has been no request by any party. It is unfair to answer that question now. We are presently only exposed to media reports and other sources. We would need to study Nur Fitri’s case first – whether he is really guilty, the extent of his wrongdoing, whether or not there is any avenue to help him, we have to look at all these aspects which MARA will handle in a professional manner. I cannot comment further on this.
Q: So, are you saying that he can still be given a second chance?
A: I am not specifically referring to Nur Fitri, but generally, human beings make errors in life. When they realise and show remorse, we must help them. MARA is an entity which contributes to the development of human capital in Malaysia. Our purpose is to produce people who are successful. We want to see our charges progress and succeed so it is wise that we give them all that they require. We have GiatMara, IKM, KPTM and other IPMAs which have helped in diverse sectors even for those who were less fortunate during their time in secondary school.
