BUTTERWORTH: Hooliganism reared its ugly head when three men attacked state MCA public service and complaints bureau head Gui Guat Lye during a campaign in Taman Kelisa Emas for the Permatang Pauh by-election here last night.
The incident happened at about 9pm, during a ceramah on a truck to explain to the people Barisan Nasional’s (BN) vision and mission in Permatang Pauh.
Gui said after the ceramah, one of the speakers alighted from the truck to shake hands with the audience but suddenly, someone began hurling abuses.
“I tried to defend our speaker but another man started to push me while another tried to hit me with a stick but missed,” he told reporters here today.
He believed the three, aged between 40 and 50, were Taman Kelisa Emas residents and the attack could be “politically motivated”.
Gui said he had lodged a report at the Bandar Perda police station at about 11pm.
Meanwhile, Penang MCA deputy chairman Tan Teik Cheng said the party would not hesitate to take legal action against hooligans out to disrupt the peaceful campaign during the by-election.
The Permatang Pauh by-election on May 7 will see a four-cornered fight involving PKR candidate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Suhaimi Sabudin (Barisan Nasional), Salleh Isahak (Independent) and Azman Shah Othman (Parti Rakyat Malaysia).
