Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sued the Election Commission and two others for not allowing him to vote in the Permatang Pauh by-election tomorrow, national news agency Bernama reported today.
The opposition leader had on April 30 sent a legal notice to EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof to enforce his right to vote in the by-election.
His lawyers N. Surendran and Latheefa Koya said then that Aziz’s decision to disqualify Anwar from voting was “unacceptable” and “irresponsible”.
Aziz had said Anwar was disqualified to vote in the by-election on May 7 as the Federal Constitution did not allow for the jailed de facto PKR chief to cast his ballot.
The former Permatang Pauh MP, is currently serving a five-year sentence in the Sungai Buloh prison for sodomy.
PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is now contesting the by-election to defend the party’s stronghold from Barisan Nasional.
Her challengers are Barisan Nasional newcomer, Suhaimi Sabudin, 43, a construction company managing director from Guar Perahu, Permatang Pauh; independent candidate Salleh Isahak, 53; and Azman Shah Othman from Parti Rakyat Malaysia.
