A life lost in MACC, the rakyat pay for it

YOURSAY ‘No amount of money can bring back a young life snuffed out.’

MACC to pay RM660k for Teoh Beng Hock death

SRMan: Victory it is for Teoh Beng Hock's family as the legal suit against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and 10 of its officers as well as the government was for negligence and assault while Teoh was in their custody, which resulted in his subsequent death.

The settlement, which is an admission of guilt by the parties sued, should be a closure of sorts after almost six long years of tiring tussle.

We may not see the murderer/murderers brought to the dock any time soon, not when the ruling government runs the country this way. I believe justice would more likely be done when an alternative government comes into power.

Nevertheless, all justice seeking rakyat should applaud the efforts by Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching in rendering assistance to the Teoh family and great work by lawyer cum Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo (who is not accepting payment of any fees from the Teoh family in this regard based on instructions given to him by his late father Karpal Singh before his untimely death).

SteveOh: Money will not bring back Teoh Beng Hock (TBH) or make up for the loss and anguish suffered by his loved ones and friends. The fact the one in charge of TBH's case at MACC was promoted added insult to injury.

What message does it send to those who cause the deaths of innocent citizens under their inquiry? A jail sentence for those who contributed to TBH's death would have been more just.

An amount of at least RM10 million albeit paid by taxpayers would be a more appropriate sum to support the message. RM660,000 is an insult to TBH's family. All victims of custodial death should be more adequately compensated.

And law enforcers that cause the deaths of witnesses or anyone in their custody directly or indirectly should face mandatory jail. Those who hold witnesses, suspects or convicts must exercise a duty of care.

Mellisa: MACC was tasked to cast aspersion on the DAP exco's assistant over an alleged RM2,000 misdemeanour as part of Umno’s 'Recapture Selangor' bid, but their incompetence resulted in TBH falling to his death. It is so very cruel that his loved ones had to suffer for six years.

Wg321: How about the MACC officer who watch sex video in the office using government-supplied laptop while mentally torturing Teoh Beng Hock to death?

This is a very serious misconduct yet he was not dismissed after a due inquiry. Does the MACC boss condone all his officers to watch sex videos in the office in order to relieve their tension and stress?

If the MACC boss does not want to take any action against such a serious misconduct, it is better for him to advise his officers to relieve their tension and stress in the toilet after watching such sex videos.

Boiling Mud: Now that the government has agreed to pay compensation to Teoh's family, it is an admission of guilt, right?

By agreeing to the settlement, does it mean Teoh's family is forfeiting the right to take those responsible for his death to the court? If this is so, then is there any other avenue to bring those responsible to face the law on behalf of Teoh's family?

Any lawyer out there who can advise on this? No amount of money can bring back a young life snuffed out by MACC. They must be brought to face justice.

Disbeliever: The compensation is long overdue. With this payment, it is obvious that MACC and the government have admitted to being negligent.

But what puzzles me is that those responsible have not been charged at all. In fact, one MACC officer got himself promoted!

If not for selective investigation and prosecution, TBH would not have died in the first place. Is this the kind of justice that is practised in Malaysia?

Justine Gow: What is RM600,000 compared to the live of a person? For a complete closure, MACC officers with blood on their hands must be brought to book to ensure that they will not do the same thing again.

Hmmmmmmmm: Yes, 600,000 is not a lot of money for a loss of life but I guess it's better than nothing under the circumstances.

The government should also look into providing for TBH's child until he turns 21 or finishes his tertiary education, whichever is later. That would have been the least they could do apart from punishing the guilty parties too.

Boeyks: The RM600,000 is paid by the rakyat, thus there is no effect on MACC. A life had been taken away and the rakyat had to pay for it. Where's justice?

FellowMalaysian: A warm round of applause to Gobind Singh and Teo Nie Ching who have both steadfastly stood by Teoh Beng Hock's family over the past six years.

Their stand has never wavered an inch since that faithful day of July 15, 2009 and a year later during Teoh's 1st Remembrance Anniversary, I attended the ceremony at the MACC office building in Shah Alam and paid a personal tribute to his family.

Teoh's family has suffered gravely as a result of his untimely death. Justice has seen some light in his persecution now that MACC has finally admitted negligence on their part.

The court should now pursue the negligence side further by identifying the culprits responsible for their oversight.

Haveagreatday: On a cool and gloomy afternoon like today, this is news that warms the heart.

Arguably, it is hardly just compensation for the life lost and the grief endured by TBH's family but still, it represents a slap for the MACC. -Mkini
