WHAT A WEAK PM! Nancy admits Najib U-TURNED on Sedition Act due to pressure
De facto law minister Nancy Shukri today admitted that‎ Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak‎ had "U-turned" on his pledge to repeal the Sedition Act, but added that he had no choice as he was facing "too much pressure" from certain groups.
She said many people were worried about the state of Malaysia, as certain "minority" sections of the society were provoking others and threatening harmony.
‎"Therefore it is the role of the government to come in. That's why the people criticised the government for having made a U-turn," she told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby.
"Why was the PM having the U-turn? It was because the pressure was too much for PM to not make the U-turn.
"Because people are talking about (how other) people are forgetting about their values, they no longer have the belief of respecting each other. Certain groups of people are beginning to worry," she said.
She denied that the Sedition Act's proposed amendments, which would allow the public prosecutor to deny bail‎ to the accused, would rob the judiciary of its powers.
She said it was only "proper" for the public prosecutor to be able to determine that the accused not be ‎granted bail.
Nancy assured that the government would "try as best as possible" not to use the Sedition Act, and instead rely on the laws in the Penal Code to charge individuals.‎

‎In a bid to "strengthen" the Sedition Act 1948, Putrajaya today tabled a bill to amend the colonial-era law.
The proposed Sedition (Amendment) Bill 2015 will include two new sections – 5A and 5B. Section 5A states that a person charged under Subsection 4(1)(a) will not be granted bail if the public prosecutor states that it is not in the public interest to grant bail to the accused.
The other section states that the court will have the power to prevent those charged under Section 4 of the Sedition Act and released on bail, from leaving the country by ordering them to surrender their travel documents for a certain period.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had repeatedly promised to abolish the Sedition Act since 2011, but at the Umno general assembly last year, he reneged on his word and said the law would be retained and "strengthened".
Critics said Najib had bowed to pressure from Umno grassroots and some Malay groups to retain the law, which they said would protect the position of the Malays, Islam and the royalty.
Putrajaya has been on a sedition blitz against a slew of individuals, including opposition politicians, activists, academics, lawyers, journalists and Muslim preachers who have either been charged with sedition, are facing trial, or under investigation under the law. – TMI
