Put up lists of GST-exempt items, supermarts urged

Deputy minister says Domestic Trade offices should help produce leaflets for supermarkets
gst_shop_600gsrHULU TERENGGANU: All supermarkets should put on display a list of goods not subject to Goods and Services Tax to help consumers with their choices, a deputy minister said today.
Jailani Johari, deputy communication minister, said the list should be displayed at supermarket entrances.
“Offices of the Domestic Trade ministry in all states should help produce leaflets containing list of goods exempted from GST, for distribution to supermarkets for display.
“If the list is displayed at the entrance, it will be easier for consumers to clearly see the list of goods and make better choices,” said Jailani, who is MP for Hulu Terengganu, after a visit to a supermarket in Kuala Berang today accompanied by Anti-Profiteering Unit officer Saidi Ismail.
Saidi said more than 500 premises in Terengganu had been inspected since the first day of the GST.
He said 18 notices were issued to traders who were believed to have committed profiteering offences. “We have also received over 100 complaints and enquiries from consumers since the first day of GST implementation,” he added.
