My son was made a scapegoat, Sirul’s mom tells Dr M

Sirul’s mother tells the former prime minister that her son acted on orders and was made the scapegoat for the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.

KUALA LUMPUR: FMT understands that sacked Umno divisional leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan personally brought PAS’s Information Chief Mahfuz Omar and Piah Ahmad, the mother of Sirul Azahar Umar to meet with former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad today. Also included in the group was Sirul’s uncle.
It is understood that at the meeting, Sirul’s mother and uncle confided in Dr Mahathir about certain facts and highly guarded secrets pertaining to the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, for which her son has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of her murder.
At the time of writing, FMT was unable to verify any details of what was discussed at the private meeting except that Sirul’s mother appealed to Dr Mahathir to save her son from the gallows.
Piah Ahmad also maintained that her son was made the scapegoat for the murder and was a victim of circumstance.
Sirul’s mother stressed that her son acted on orders from higher up and was paying the price of his actions now.
Efforts to reach Khairuddin for confirmation have been fruitless although FMT was told that the meeting did indeed take place at 4pm today.
Just days ago, Mahathir was quoted as saying it would be cruel to hang Sirul if it was indeed proven that he was following orders to kill the Mongolian.
“The public is wondering who gave Sirul the order,” he wrote in a blog posting. “He (Sirul) was Dato Sri Najib’s bodyguard and his allegation must be investigated to determine who gave the order. Najib has only said that Sirul was talking rubbish. There’s been no investigation.
“We’re talking about somebody’s life. It would be cruel indeed to kill someone who was following orders.”
Sirul’s mother has been to Sydney pleading for her son’s asylum where he remains in detention after fleeing the country.
“It is safer here than in Malaysia for Sirul,” Piah had said.
