KUALA LUMPUR: The office of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has denied that he had expressed support of a new security law against terrorism in foreign countries.
The new law was passed by the Dewan Rakyat with other anti-terrorist legislation, and the national news agency Bernama had reported him as having supported the bill.
However, Hadi’s office said in a statement today, quoted by Malaysiakini, that the news report was “inaccurate and antithetical to the actual statement by the PAS president”.
Bernama’s report, etitled ‘PAS supports government effort to combat terrorism through Pota’ was “a far cry from the essence of what was said by the PAS president,” said Hadi’s political secretary, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Malaysiakini reported.
Ahmad Samsuri said Hadi agreed that combatting terrorism was needed and was promoted in Islam. However, Hadi, who is Marang MP, had opposed the government policy “from a technical legal standpoint” and he had held lengthy debates on this.
He said a recording of Hadi’s statement at the press conference would be uploaded online to enable people to verify what he said.
