Conscience of BN, ‘my foot’, Ong tell Gerakan

The MP for Serdang says that with Gerakan and MCA in BN, human rights in Malaysia is facing dark times.
ong kian ming, gerakanKUALA LUMPUR: Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming finds it disgraceful that Gerakan, represented by its President and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mah Siew Keong, and the party’s Simpang Renggam Member of Parliament, Liang Teck Meng, did not utter even a squeak of protest against the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) which Umno Home Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, bulldozed through Parliament.
At the same time, MCA, which lauded the abolishment of the Internal Security Act (ISA) and also the initial announcement of the abolishment of the Sedition Act, he fumed, was also amazingly silent during the debate on amendments to the Pota Bill.
“Conscience My foot!” said Ong. “With the so-called defenders of liberal and democratic values like Gerakan and the MCA in BN, the protection of human rights in Malaysia is facing dark times.”
Gerakan has often called itself the “conscience of the BN” and has previously voiced its opposition against the ISA, he noted. “As recently as October 2013, Gerakan, in a booklet entitled ‘Gerakan Speaks Up’ had the following statement:
“Gerakan has been at the forefront of opposing preventive detention and have spoken up against the ISA, EO and other draconian laws. Recently, we also voiced our concerns with the amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act. The Central Bureau on the Law and Human Rights has been consistent in its fight for laws that conform to international human rights norms and Malaysia’s own human rights obligations. We have also been critical of the heavy handed actions of the police and have consistently supported the formation of the IPCMC.”
“When I was debating the amendments to Section 13 to 28 of the Pota Bill proposed by Hanipa Maidin, Member of Parliament for Sepang, I invited Liang to defend his party’s position on the Pota Bill,” said Ong. “His disappointing reply was ‘Malas nak jawab’ (lazy to reply).”
It is highly disappointing, he added, that the supposed conscience of the BN could not even be bothered to mount a defence of the controversial Pota Bill that allows for indefinite detention without trial.
Pota was passed by 79 votes to 60 at 2.26am Tuesday morning after nearly 15 hours of debate in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of Parliament. The Bill was tabled last Monday.
Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad and Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen, spoke up for the Opposition, when they charged that Pota was the reincarnation of the ISA.
The ISA, which allowed for detention without trial to combat militant communism, was eventually used against legitimate Opposition and to stifle dissent.
