JOHOR BHARU: Several business leaders have urged the Malaysian and Singapore government to move ahead with plans for a proposed rapid transit system between the two cities.
The two prime ministers, Najib Razak and Lee Hsien Loong are expected to make an announcement on the transit system next month at a Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat.
Johor India Business Association president P. Sivakumar, quoted by Star Online, said a joint announcement had been due in November 2013.
Johor folk were still in the dark about whether the project would take off, he was quoted as saying. “The sooner the project starts, the better it is.”
The transit system and a new high-speed rail link from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore were announced jointly by Najib and Lee in February, and was expected to begin operations between Johor Baru and Singapore by 2018.
Sivakumar said the two governments should consider extending the transit link to Tanjung Kupang and Tuas.
Property consultant Samuel Tan said the transit project would definitely boost development in the Iskandar Malaysia scheme, and a relief for thousands working in Singapore who suffer congestion at the Causeway for hours.
Developers association chairman Hoe Mee Ling said the transit system would lead to more demand for property in Iskandar Malaysia.
