Nurul stays defiant: ‘Remanded but never defeated’

The MP for Lembah Pantai refuses to let down her defences, asking the people to fight for a fair Malaysia.
nurul izzah ditahan2KUALA LUMPUR: In a tweet to her supporters, MP for Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah Anwar, arrested just hours ago for a speech she made in Parliament last week, stayed defiant, beseeching the people to continue fighting for a fair Malaysia while vowing herself to remain undefeated by the police’s decision to remand her for the night.
“Teman-teman, jangan biarkan mereka merampas hak kita. (Friends, don’t let them take away our rights). Fight for a fair Malaysia! Allahuakbar! (Allah is great!) Remanded but never defeated,” she tweeted.
Nurul, the eldest daughter of jailed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, was arrested under the Sedition Act when she turned up at the Dang Wangi police station Monday, as requested, to give a statement on the KitaLawan rally of March 7.
nurul ditahan2No stranger to being arrested for sedition himself, lawyer Eric Paulsen, tweeted: “Jom ke Lokap Jinjang malam ini. @n_izzah kuatkan semangat (Let’s go to the Jinjang lockup tonight, @n_izzah uplift her spirits), a call seconded by Tian Chua, MP for Batu.
Paulsen also tweeted: “Who else but the judiciary can rakyat look to when fundamental rights are abused, when politically motivated arrest & detention are made,” and asked if the judiciary was willing to act to stop the “continued abuse of power” by the police and the Attorney-General.
Meanwhile PKR’s Communications Director Fahmi Fadzil, tweeted a confirmation that Nurul would be held overnight at the Jinjang police station, angering DAP elder statesman Lim Kit Siang who also took to Twitter.
“Nurul Izzah’s arrest a gross abuse of police powers as MP has immunity for speeches in Parliament except for 4entrenched subjects.” He followed that tweet with another: “Police report shld be lodged angst Ketua Penolong Pengarah D5, Bukit Aman 4 false arrest of Nurul, who shld also be sent 2 Jinjang on remand.”
Nurul was arrested for reading a speech on behalf of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is imprisoned for committing sodomy, and who was denied permission to attend Parliament although he remains the MP for Permatang Pauh.
In a picture Fahmi shared on Twitter, Nurul was seen crying, hugging her children before being led away.
Fahmi tweeted: “Sedihnya…@n_Izzah bersama anak2, sblm dibawa ke lokap Jinjang utk ditahan satu malam. (Heart wrenching… Izzah with her kids, before being led away to the lockup in Jinjang where she will be remanded for the night.”
