Magistrate under fire for longer remand order

Lawyer questions 'flight risk' claim over activists Adam and Mandeep
Ramkarpal_Paulsen_kitalawan_300KUALA LUMPUR: A magistrate’s decision to remand two activists for three days on the basis they were “flight risks” has been described by their lawyer as “shocking and appalling”.
Eric Paulsen, for activist Adam Adli and Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh, said the pair had cooperated with the police, who had not stated there was any danger of the two fleeing.
Ramkarpal Singh, for DAP Youth leader Teo Kok Seong, whose remand was extended by one day, said the extension was unnecessary. All three had surrendered themselves and had cooperated with the police.
Paulsen said the magistrate, Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin, was wrong in law and had decided without basis that the two were “flight risks”.
Adam, Mandeep and Teo were arrested for their part in the KitaLawan public rallies held in central Kuala Lumpur to demand the freedom of jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Paulsen said he would file for a revision on the decision early on Monday.
