Leadership in total disarray – T.K. Chua

How do we teach our children and grandchildren the values of honesty, integrity and true leadership when we see events unfolding in our country each day that are filled with depravity? How do we teach them about morality, sins and faith in God when we have so much dissonance in our midst?
Almost everything sacred is violated beyond recognition. We as a nation live a “principle-less” life in a depraved society where we condone, tolerate or ignore every gross indecency that comes our way. We misconstrue faith in God with religiosity. We depict moderation and inclusiveness when we are closet racists and dangerous bigots.
I don’t know, have you ever wondered if we instil in our children and grandchildren the old-fashioned values our parents and grandparents taught us, whether they would be able to survive in this country today?
Why the need for integrity and honesty? All we need is someone able to cover our tracks for us. What more if we have a minister of integrity and an auditor able to vouch for us.
Why the need to be truthful? It does not pay. Just keep twisting and turning and soon no one will know the difference between facts and fiction.
There is no need for efficiency and doing it right the first time.  There will be overpaid consultants ready on standby to “restructure”, “revamp” and “bail out” (whatever these terms mean) the mess we create each day. Think about it, can you recall us ever having done one thing right – one thing without scandal, without scheming, without payoff and without bail-out? Think harder.
Why nurture capabilities and strive for qualifications and professionalism to advance our careers when all we need is to be politically correct and defend our bosses and masters to the death, no matter how screwed up they are? Is this not the best career path?
Why the need to subscribe to justice and equality? These are ugly Western concepts which are not practical or suitable for us. Accept it, so long as injustice is inflicted on others, not us. What equality? We just need to find a way to climb above others and share the spoils.
And why harp on the need to adhere to the rule of law? Isn’t everything hunky dory when we have laws, prosecution, defence, proceeding and judgement? Likewise, why harp on our democratic rights when we have general elections every five years? We care for the form; substance and principles are never important.
Why the need to be transparent and hold on to what was gentlemanly agreed? Well, everything is trickery and based on expediency. Please learn to accept it.
Have you ever wondered if we continue teaching our kids and grandkids all the noble values, their democratic rights and rule of law, whether they may actually grow up becoming misfits in our society? They may not survive; they may actually blame us for teaching them the wrong stuff.
We yearn for our leaders to practise the true values of leadership, honesty and integrity. But I think our yearning is now more daunting than we thought. Have you recently heard our leaders preaching on public duties, responsibilities, sacrifice, morality and integrity?  Have we heard from our ministers in charge of integrity and KPI lately?  Are they still in the Cabinet?
I am afraid these are the true measure of our degree of depravity today. I think our leaders are not just incapable of practising good governance; they have even lost their credentials and credibility to talk about it anymore. Most leaders are probably feeling embarrassed of their own situation right now. That explains their intransigent defiance; that explains their moral deficiency to preach to their citizens.
Who really can save this country from total meltdown? I don’t know, think harder – outside the box is where we should start.
