I never made a single sen from gambling or illegal means, says Zahid

Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he has never earned a single sen from illegal means, including gambling.
He said he had been accused of being friends with "the biggest gambling taukeh (boss) in the world" involved in online football betting.
"I know what is halal (legal) and haram (illegal). I have never made a single sen from gambling or illegal means," he said when delivering his opening speech at the ninth forum on crime and policing in Malaysia at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today.
In December, Zahid wrote a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding Phua. In the letter, he said he had been asked by Phua's Malaysian and American legal teams to write to the FBI over the bureau's suspicion into Phua's plausible involvement with the Chinese transnational organised crime organisation "14K" in Malaysia.
"As such to assist both your department and Mr Phua's legal teams, based on our information, Mr Phua is neither a member nor is he associated with the "14K" triad.
"Moreover, according to our records, Mr Phua has, numerous occasions, assisted the Government of Malaysia on projects affecting our national security and accordingly we continue to call upon him to assist us from time to time and as such we are eager for him to return to Malaysia," Zahid wrote in the letter.
The letter to FBI deputy director Mark F. Giuliano, was exposed by South China Morning Post in a report on December 31.
In January, Zahid broke his silence on the matter, telling the media that as home minister, he had the authority to write to the FBI.
However, he did not give further details to explain his actions nor details of the national security projects Phua had aided the government.
Speaking to reporters after opening the forum, Zahid said he would reveal more on the matter in Parliament soon.
During the forum, Zahid also told the audience that even he was not spared of accusations, just like law enforcement agencies like the police.
Such accusations against them, he said, was due to the negative perception the public have towards crime, the law enforcement agencies and the efforts made to fight and prevent crime.
He said much has been done to improve enforcement operations, including tackling leakages of information on operations and setting up special task forces.
Ops Cantas that was aimed to combat triads in the country had managed to reduce crime by 30%, he said, adding that no matter what the minister and its law enforcement agencies have done, it was never good enough for the people.
However, he expressed confidence that the people will put their trust in the minister and its agencies to fight crime, which was a matter of national interest that was beyond race, religion and politics.
