Work permit touts harrassing our staff, says MyEG

'Tontos' fear loss of income as govt contractor brings in online system
myegKUALA LUMPUR: Touts fearing the loss of income of RM200-300 per transaction have been threatening and harrassing staff of the government’s online payments and registration system contractor MyEG, the company said.
Several police reports have been lodged on these threats, MyEG said in a statement here.
The Immigration Department has contracted MyEG to set up an online system for registeration and renewal of foreign workers’ permits.
The company said MyEG officers had been stationed at temporary booths at Immigration Departments in several states including Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka since last Monday and had faced the brunt of anger from disgruntled individuals.
It said these individuals, speculated to be “tontos”, threatened MyEG staff and vandalised furniture.
The online system would remove the need for these “tontos” who acted as agents of employers to obtain or renew work permits for foreign workers and they risked losing RM200 to RM300 per transaction, the company said.
The online work permit system is designed to identify foreign workers in the country and employers who have engaged illegal foreign workers as well as provide more efficient permit transactions.
MyEG’s role was not only to renew permits but to compile, verify, maintain, update and analyse the database. This database would hold information on legal and illegal foreign workers; details of authorised employers as well as employers who, unknown to them, have foreign workers registered under their name; and employers of illegal foreign workers.
The company has previously set up online systems for paymet of road tax and police summonses for traffic offences.
