WHAT SAYS PM NAJIB? Another minister says Jakim threat to arrest K-pop girls ‘UNNECESSARY’
KUALA LUMPUR - The Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government has said that threatening to arrest three Muslims girls for allowing K-Pop band members to hug and kiss them on stage, was “over the top”.
In a tweet he sent out on January 14, Abdul Rahman Dahlan said, “Talk to them. Counsel them. Advice them.
“But threatening them with arrest? That’s absolutely unnecessary. That’s over the top.”
He was most likely referring to the threat to arrest the three girls that was issued by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim), whose director-general Othman Mustapha described the girls’ behaviour last Saturday as “shameful”.
Abdul Rahman also sent out another tweet saying, “And when you do finally realize that counselling them is the best option, do it privately to avoid embarrassing them. Please.”
While some of his followers did not agree with him, others felt the minister was right with one Mohamad Azim tweeting: “agree with you sir. I’m also angry over their action but punishment will not solve anything, it creates new problems.”
Zalman Zulkifli meanwhile had praises for the minister himself, tweeting: “I have always enjoyed your practical voice of reason Sir. Well said. Thank you for making it heard.”
According to a Bernama report on the incident, Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Ahmad Shabery Cheek also agreed that punishment was uncalled for and that the girls should be given counselling instead.
He also clarified that there was nothing his ministry could do regarding what took place during the B1A4 concert as it was a “spontaneous” incident occurring outside the jurisdiction of the Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (Puspal).
Meanwhile Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin, who earlier in the week drew flak for his careless tweet about the K-Pop band members, chose to re-tweet Abdul Rahman’s message about advice and counselling being the better alternatives to threatening the girls with arrest.
In Khairy’s earlier tweet, he chose not to pass judgement on the actual hugging and kissing per se, but made a careless remark all the same that some K-Pop fans took offence to, with one even labelling the statement as “racist”.
In the tweet, Khairy said: “Banyak dikatakan ttg Kpop. Harap gadis2 Msia kembali kpd lelaki tall, dark & hensem. Bukan pale, skinny & pretty. Itu bukan lelaki sejati. (Much has been said about K-Pop. Hope Malaysian girls go back to tall, dark and handsome men. Not pale, skinny & pretty. Those aren’t real men.”
The K-Pop incident took on scandalous proportions when a video of three young Muslim girls, wearing tudungs, was posted on Facebook by tv.SukanStar.com, with a title that said the girls were being “molested” on stage.
In the video, the three girls were seen meeting their idols, who hugged and kissed them. - FMT
