Turmoil in Harakah

One of the papers founders dares Mustafa Ali to quit his chairmanship.
harakah mustafa ali2KUALA LUMPUR: A founder of the PAS organ Harakah has challenged PAS Secretary-General Mustafa Ali to resign as chairman of the publication.
This follows the dismissal of editor-in-chief Ahmad Lutfi Othman and two other editors, Tarmizi Md Jam and Roslan Hamid.
Ishak Surin, one of the founders of the paper and now chairman of PAS’ Batu division, said the dismissal of the three was unjust and a violation of the right to freedom of expression.
“I dare Mustafa Ali to resign,” he said in an interview with Utusan Malaysia. He decried the decision to sack the three as “despotic”.
The three were sacked almost immediately after the publication of an article criticising the leadership of PAS’ ulama wing.
Harakah began publication in 1986 and Ishak was its chairman in its first two years.
According to Utusan, Ishak said ordering Lutfi to resign while he was recuperating from surgery was unethical.
“It was shocking,” he was quoted as saying.
“Is this part of the upheaval of the leadership crisis and a result of the conflict between certain groups?
“Is this going to expose the hypocrites who misuse Islam?”
He said the PAS leadership was heading in the wrong direction and damaging the image of Islam in the process.
The offending article that allegedly led to the editors’ sacking was written by Shamsudin Othman, better known as Dinsman. He is Lutfi’s brother.
“I’ve been criticised for trying to break the immunity of the religious scholars, who think they are invincible,” said Dinsman.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the People’s Artist Axis (Paksi), Rozan Azen Mat Rasip, has urged the Harakah management to let the employees form a union to protect their welfare.
“We want an explanation from the PAS ulama regarding the matter,” he said. “If their actions were against the teachings of Islam, we insist on their apology and that they reinstate the journalists.”
The Angry Media Movement (Geramm) has also expressed concern over the matter. Geramm coordinator Fazallah Pit said his group feared that there was prejudice against the sacked editors due to internal political pressure.
“Even if Harakah is a partisan newspaper, staff welfare should be taken care of properly,” he said.
“At the same time, the freedom of the media should be respected, not controlled.”
