Tony Fernandes locks horns with Indon officials: 'We have the right to fly Surabaya-S'pore'
KUALA LUMPUR - AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes insisted that Indonesia AirAsia was permitted to fly the Singapore-Surabaya route seven days a week.
In a statement sent to the Singapore Straits Times today, Fernandes denied admitting that the ill-fated QZ8501 had flown the route without permit.
“We have the right to fly Surabaya-Singapore. We had flown that schedule and had rights for 7 days a week.”
"We have secured both slots as well as approval from both Indonesia and Singapore. What happened was purely an administrative error," said the statement.
On Monday, Acting Indonesian Director General of Air Transportation Djoko Murdjatmodjo said that the airline had violated flight route rules agreed by both parties.
Murdjatmodjo said that during the summer period, the airline was allowed to fly the Surabaya – Singapore route daily, but for the winter period, was allowed to fly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
“Based on our identification, Indonesia AirAsia has violated flight path rules because the airline did not have a license to fly the Surabaya to Singapore route on Sundays. Therefore, the ministry has suspended Indonesia AirAsia flights on the Surabaya-to-Singapore route," he said. - NST
