ANOTHER ZAHID BOMBSHELL: Minister gave LUCRATIVE monopoly of work permit services to private firm MyEG, claims PKR

ANOTHER ZAHID BOMBSHELL: Minister gave LUCRATIVE monopoly of work permit services to private firm MyEG, claims PKR
KUALA LUMPUR - The opposition wants to know from Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi why private firm MyEG, from January 5 this year, has been made the sole online provider for the renewal of the Temporary Work Permits of Foreign Workers.
They also want to know whether MyEG secured the contract through open tender, and what happens to the monies collected by it.
Further, they want to know why the Immigration Department has scrapped the Temporary Work Visa renewal counters in Peninsula Malaysia.
“MyEG doesn’t offer free services like the Immigration Department counters. It charges RM 38 per year per worker,’ said PKR’s Johari Abdul at party headquarters.“Based on the 2.3 million registered foreign workers in Malaysia, MyEG will rake in RM87.4 million a year.”
He noted that the Immigration Department has claimed that MyEG will reduce hassles at the counters and do away with touts. “MyEG undermines the government and civil servants. Such services should be offered by the Government, not a private firm.”
“We find the reasoning unacceptable. The issues could be dealt better given the advent of new technology and methods,” he added. “This decision will deeply impact employers who would have to bear the additional cost on top of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and a stagnant economy.”
He urged the Home Minister to continue with counter services as an option besides MyEG. - FMT
