Passport cancellations expose Malaysia’s high-handed mindset – J.D. Lovrenciear

The ongoing saga relating to the Malaysian authorities’ cancellation of the international passports of two Malaysians is indeed drawing much global and local attention, and rightfully so.
Lawyers are clarifying that the Immigration department has no legal basis to do so and that this makes a mockery of our very Federal Constitution.
It is a categorical imperative that weighs upon every individual of a nation –citizens, rulers, leaders and policy vanguards – to abide by the constitution of the nation. Acting in violation of the enshrined constitution of a nation is tantamount to the highest degree of treason against state and citizens.
While we are in the thick of this latest controversy let us also take cognisance of another mighty-handed practice in the country with regards constitutional rights and passports.
Malaysians and the millions of foreign immigrants in the country are also aware of the widespread malpractice where the travel documents of foreign workers are unlawfully kept by their employers.
The fear of the workers fleeing overrides safeguarding the universal practice and honour that needs to be accorded to possession of passports, mind you!
Despite so much talk, this total and blatant disregard of the fundamental rights of foreign citizens (immigrant workers) also reflects the mindset that is prevalent in the country. So is it a surprise that even our elected and chosen leaders violate the constitutional rights of their own citizens?
Now before the paid stooges jump the gun and retort that this writer is condoning and supporting the fugitives, please be reminded that the debate here is about the sacred and revered fundamental rights of citizens, ie. constitutional rights and the one and several actions that contravene our Federal Constitution and the human rights of citizens across the region.
This revocation of passports issue must be resolved and appropriate action taken without blinkered vision because as much as we do not want to promote a culture of insults and betrayal against a nation, we also must put our foot down when appointed leaders and paid vanguards react in a thuggish and foolish manner that violates the rights of citizens.
Again, an embarrassing ball has been dribbled onto the turf of nation’s prime leader and so Datuk Seri Najib Razak must respond in a timely manner.
