It’s your fault, minister tells Sabah on illegals

A Sabah MP is blaming his own people over the influx of illegal immigrants, saying it is their fault for helping them seek refuge in the country’s easternmost state.
Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan was quoted by The Borneo Post as saying that it was the state’s leaders who asked for the use of statutory declaration for issuance of identification cards to its people.
He said irresponsible village chiefs later abused this to help immigrants pose as locals and obtain citizenship.
“It is always easier to point fingers outwards but we must take upon ourselves and do our part to solve this problem,” The Borneo Post quoted him as saying.
The Borneo Post quoted Dahlan, who is also the urban well-being, housing and local government minister, as saying in the 70s, many did not have an identification card and could not prove their identity as citizens.
This prompted the state to request for the law to be eased so that the public could be issued identification, even if they did not have birth certificates, which was a requirement under the standard procedure of issuing the document.
The Malaysian Insider reported that the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah made public its 368-page report on Wednesday.
It said syndicates and those with help from corrupt officials set up "Project IC" in Sabah for a political agenda and money, but was silent on those whose actions altered the state's demographics and religious balance.
The findings earned the royal panel flak from opposition leaders, the most vocal being Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Calling it meaningless verbiage, the de factor PKR leader said the responsibility for what was clearly Malaysia's biggest illegal-immigrant scandal was placed firmly on errant civil servants.
"The masterminds and actual culprits responsible for the nefarious import of illegal immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia into Sabah have been let off the hook."
