Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi must explain why he cannot keep his pledge that police will probe all seditious remarks within 24 hours of a police report, the DAP said today.
The party's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang questioned today why Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was taking too long in ordering a police probe on Umno's Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim for falsely claiming that a Chinese man had burned the Quran.
"How many '24 hours' will Zahid need before the police would act on the numerous police reports which had been lodged against Mashitah and Zaidi? 48 hours, 96 hours, 240 hours or 480 hours?," Lim asked in a statement.
Lim said it had been more than a week since a police report was lodged against Mashitah by DAP MPs Teo Nie Ching and Kasthuri Patto and his political secretary Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud for the remark allegedly made by Mashitah at the recent Umno general assembly, even though the facts of the alleged incident showed that it did not involve a Chinese man.
Lim said yesterday he visited the food court at the Taman Anggerik market in Alor Star, Kedah, with several Pakatan Rakyat MPs and assemblyman to speak to stallholders and people in the area about the incident.
From these conversations, Lim said they found that no such incident took place and corroborated the statement issued by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir that‎ on November 20, a mentally-ill Malay individual had torn the Quran and was being detained in a psychiatric ward.
"Our fact-finding confirmed that Mashitah was guilty of a heinous hate speech by fabricating the dangerous lie in a multi-racial and multi-religious society," he added.
Lim further said the home minister should visit the Taman Anggerik food court to confirm the facts for himself.
He also chided the Umno leadership and delegates of the party's general assembly last week, adding that Umno ministers appeared incapable of discharging their duties to all Malaysians.
"What is shocking is that a former deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department could be so irresponsible as to purvey such hate speech to incite interracial and interreligious discord, tension and conflict, and despite the facts, Mashitah is not prepared to retract her lies and publicly apologise for her most irresponsible hate speech.
"But what is even more shocking is that the top Umno leadership, by their silence and inaction, is prepared to aid, abet and condone her misdeed,"said Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP.
He added that Mashitah was ‎not the only Umno delegate guilty of hate speech which incited interracial and interreligious fear and tension.
Lim said that Umno delegate Datuk Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said had also undermined the nation's peace and harmony by saying that the success of Penang was because of illegal businesses and crimes committed by the Chinese.
