Paintings worth RM1.5 million by award-winning PRC artist Chen Shi Jie recovered.
SEPANG: A gallery owner with a ‘Datuk’ title was among eight people arrested by the police in connection with the theft of six paintings worth RM1.5 million. The paintings, by award-winning People’s Republic of China artist Chen Shi Jie, were recovered from the Datuk’s house in Damansara on December 6.
They were reported missing at the KL International Airport (KLIA) on November 20.
Sepang police chief, ACP Mohd Yusoff Awang said coincidentally, Chen, 54, and a group of ‘interested parties’ who had visited a painting exhibition in Beijing, China, took the same flight to Malaysia from Beijing on November 20.
“Realising that the painter was coming to Malaysia for an exhibition, the group decided to steal his paintings which were stored in a box at the baggage claim centre in KLIA.
“Chen was shocked upon finding his paintings missing when he went to claim them at 8.30am, on the day of the incident,” he told a media conference today.
