DAP pledges Sabah, Sarawak, peninsula equal partners

Fair revenue distribution under equal partnership and greater autonomy concepts.
Chong-Chieng-Jen-sarawakKUALA LUMPUR: Kuching MP, Chong Chieng Jen, attributes Sarawak’s unity to Umno staying out from the state unlike in neighbouring Sabah which has been overwhelmed by 1.7 million illegal immigrants, under Putrajaya’s watch, as against a local population of 1.2 million.
He also pledged that his party is committed to the Federation of 1963 as an equal partnership of Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula and greater autonomy for the two Borneo nations.
“This will go some way towards satisfying the demands of activists who want Sabah and Sarawak to exit the Federation,” said Chong who is also DAP Sarawak chairman and Kota Sentosa Assemblyman. “We have to have autonomy in education policies, healthcare and security.”
He was debating the Central Executive Committee resolution at the DAP National Conference.
Chong warned that “we have to address the separatist sentiment, and one way to do that is to address unfairness, discrimination and injustice that has been done to Sarawak”.
DAP’s Bintulu Declaration 2014, he reiterated, calls for reinstating and restoring the equal partnership of Sarawak and Sabah with the peninsula.
Chong said that Sarawak remains the last state without the influence of Umno and “it’s why there’s still racial harmony in Sarawak”.
The education syllabus, he charged, was drafted by officials appointed by Umno which incorporated “Umno influences and polemics” which “poisons” the younger generation of Sarawakians”. “We feel that to continue the fight to keep Umno out of Sarawak, education policy is one thing we have to take back,” he said. “The Sarawak government has to formulate education syllabus. We need to come up with a policy that is all inclusive.”
Equal partnership and greater autonomy, he added, called for revenue distribution to be fair, and urged that 60 per cent of revenue collected from Sarawak be returned to the state.
He cited the original 1963 Constitution where Singapore was given 60 per cent of the tax revenue from Singapore.
“It is not something that is outrageous. It has to be done. With the tax revenue, we can become true equal partners,” he said.
