BULLY, BRIBE, ANOTHER PROJECT I.C.? BN must be aggressive in recruiting new voters - Muhyiddin
BINTULU - Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today called on BN component parties to be more aggressive in getting people to register as voters and to set targets for themselves in every constituency.
He said this was a necessity as part of the preparation for the 11th Sarawak elections and the 14th General Election. The Sarawak elections are due in 2016 and the general election, in 2018.
Muhyiddin, who is the deputy prime minister, said the process of registering new voters by the BN component parties had been unsatisfactory so far.
“We will constantly monitor (the registration of new voters) and obtain periodical reports from the component parties,” he told reporters after opening the triennial general assembly of the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) here.
Muhyiddin said an analysis of the data obtained from the Election Commission showed that the opposition political parties were more aggressive than BN component parties in getting people registered as voters.
“This does not mean that we have not gone down to the ground. BN component parties have been on the ground for much longer to register new voters than the opposition parties,” he said.
He said the BN parties should set targets on registration of new voters for each constituency so that the BN could focus on the needs of the community there according to the age groups.
Earlier, in his speech opening the assembly, Muhyiddin called for expediting of the rehabilitation of the SPDP in time to face the Sarawak elections.
“The term of the Sarawak legislative assembly ends in June 2016; we do not have much time,” he said, adding that the SPDP new leadership should focus on strengthening the party instead of squabbling with former party members.
“SPDP should consider ways to help the people to among others, address the higher cost of living and meet educational needs,” he said.
Sarawak Chief Minister and state BN chairman Tan Sri Adenan Satem, in his speech, said a state cabinet reshuffle would be made after the 11th Sarawak elections and pledged to include SPDP elected representatives in the state cabinet.
He said cabinet posts could not be given to SPDP representatives now because assemblymen who were with the SPDP had left to join other parties.
In the 10th Sarawak elections, SPDP contested eight seats and won six, namely Tasik Biru, Marudi, Bekenu, Batu Danau, Pakan and Meluan. It lost in the contest in Ba’Kelalan and Krian.
Five of the assemblymen, namely Datuk Peter Nansian (Tasik Biru), Datuk Sylvester Entrie (Marudi), Rosie Yunus (Bekenu), Paulus Gumbang (Batu Danau) and Tan Sri William Mawan (Pakan), who is the former SPDP president, left the party in the middle of this year and joined Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) while Wong Judat (Meluan) joined the Sarawak Workers Party (SWP).
SPDP acting president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, in his speech, reiterated the party stand to oppose the admission of Teras into the Sarawak BN. - Bernama
