Perodua Alza burts into flames after crashing into gas cylinders falling from lorry
Former serviceman Mohd Nasir Jaafar was almost paralysed with fear as he struggled to free himself from his burning car.
The car had crashed into liquid petroleum gas cylinders that had fallen off a lorry along the North-South Expressway in Kuala Kangsar on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old father was desperate to get to his 10-year-old son in the back seat for fear that his Perodua Alza car would explode, The Star reported.
Mr Mohd Nasir said: "I felt a terrible pain in my left hip and I just could not reach my son, no matter how hard I tried.
"Thankfully, some people opened the car door, pulled him to safety and got me out as well. Not long after, my car burst into flames."
Father and son were taken to a hospital in Ipoh, where Mr Mohd Nasir was given outpatient treatment for injuries to his left hip, left hand and forehead.
His son, Muhammad Syakirin, suffered serious head injuries and remains in critical condition.
Mr Mohd Nasir and his son were on their way from Kuala Kedah to Port Dickson at about 8.45am when their car was hit by falling cylinders from a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
LOST CONTROL
The lorry had overturned after the driver, Mr Shahizi Abd Hamid Abdullah, 40, was believed to have lost control of the vehicle, The Star reported.
The lorry driver's two-year-old son, Muhammad Adam Darwish, is also critically injured and is being treated at the same hospital.
A Perodua Myvi driven by civil servant Nor Sidek Ramli, 58, who was heading for a meeting in Ipoh with his wife Mazilina Mohd Ali, 52, was also damaged in the accident.
Mr Nor Sidek told The Star: "I managed to brake in time. But even then, there was no way to avoid the cylinders. My car was badly damaged. My wife and I ran as fast as we could to the side of the expressway."
He said his wife managed to free Muhammad Syakirin.
The incident caused a 5km-long crawl on both sides of the expressway as rescue officers and police worked feverishly to clear the highway. -Asiaone
