Khairy has slammed former national shuttler Razif for alleging that Lee Chong Wei has been using dexamethasone for a long time. – The Malaysian Insider pic, November 12, 2014.Khairy Jamaluddin today slammed former national shuttler Razif Sidek for alleging world No. 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei has been using dexamethasone, the banned substance he was tested positive with, for a long time.
The Youth and Sports Minister, according to The Star Online, said that the allegation was unsubstantiated and urged people not to speculate until the Badminton World Federation (BWF) hearing early next month.
Razif was quoted by Malay daily Kosmo! yesterday alleging that officials within the Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) were also aware of the matter.
He had claimed that no one dared to say anything due to Chong Wei’s position as a world badminton champion.
"This is a serious allegation which I find disturbing," Khairy said at a press conference today.
The news portal reported that Khairy also said that Razif should have provided some evidence before making such a serious allegation.
He added that Chong Wei had asked his lawyer to draft a letter to demand that Razif retract the allegation and to not repeat it, reported The Star Online.
BWF said yesterday that Chong Wei has been provisionally suspended for an "apparent" anti-doping violation.
The body reportedly said it has imposed the suspension due to "an Adverse Analytical Finding of a sample taken at the BWF World Championships in August".
It said that the matter has been referred to the BWF Doping Hearing Panel and, the Chair of the Panel would set the time, date and location for a hearing.
"The Panel will determine whether or not the athlete has committed an anti-doping regulation violation," it added.
This means that Lee, 32, will be barred from all competitions.
