MCA: Dr M’s statement out of tune

Government should help all those in need, irrespective of race, says senator.
mahathir2KUALA LUMPUR: There would be no racial conflict if government measures were based on need and merit, MCA Youth chairman Senator Chong Sin Woon said.
In a press statement, Chong dismissed former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that meritocracy could result in “the best gets all” while the poor would be sidelined.
He said MCA would support government measures to help any person in need, regardless of race, religion and culture.
He added that this would include the poor, sickly and those with low education, irrespective of race.
Chong also suggested the government use various social protection and welfare measures to help alleviate the burden of these people.
“If the government chooses to help only one particular ethnic group, unity will take a backseat as the races would no longer help and care for each other,” he said.
He added that meritocracy being a global trend was of paramount importance to help professionals realise their full potential.
“A brain-drain will be unavoidable if a race-quota system is used to dominate the public and private sectors,” said Chong.
He said only when the government was fair and transparent would the rakyat blend together harmoniously.
