KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (IS or ISIS) appears to be gaining ground in its recruitment of Malaysians for its violent campaign to establish a caliphate that would initially cover countries in the Middle East.
Speaking at a youth forum , Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) representative Ahmad El Mohammady said the prevalence of IS supporters in Malaysia was evident in personal Facebook pages and the distribution of ISIS-branded T-shirts.

Ahmad, a political science lecturer at the International Islamic University (UIAM), spoke of Facebook pages through which Malaysians actively promote the jihadist group.
“I have seen the postings getting more than 5,000 likes, and there are bound to be some who will be taken up by what is said,” he said. “It has yet to reach the point where they are taking up arms, but it doesn’t mean we should not be concerned.”
He said the government was “well aware of these groups” and closely monitoring their activities. But it would take time to deal with the situation because the government needed to collect evidence, he added.
“IS is smart,” he said. “It is led by young people and it has experts packaging its image in HD video, T-shirts and websites to promote its cause.”
He said the government would need to work with the public in order to deal with extremism.
Last night’s forum was billed as “No to Terrorism”. Ahmad shared the stage with Global Movement of Moderates Foundation CEO Saifuddin Abdullah and Julia Sveshnikova of the Islamic Renaissance Front.
Ahmad also commented on the activism of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), saying it should voice out its concerns rationally instead of just telling non-Muslims what they are not allowed to do.
Isma has called on authorities to ban the annual Oktoberfest beer festival and has condemned PAS MP Khalid Samad for defending the non-Muslims’ right to celebrate it.
“Isma is entitled to its views,” Ahmad said, “but there is no compulsion in Islam and you can’t force it on the non-Muslims.”
