Is the govt’s GST a big con?

Ariff Sabri questions the maths behind deducting the RM13.8 billion revenue from the projected GST income.
GST300KUALA LUMPUR: MP for Raub Ariff Sabri today said the government was taking the people for fools when they explained the RM13.8 billion previously made via the Sales and Services Tax (SST), was being deducted from the projected Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a bid to show that the net income from the GST would be merely RM690 million.
Warning that “government officers better buck up”, Ariff pointed out in his latest blog entry, that what was previously collected through SST would still be collected under GST, meaning “We haven’t lost anything”.
Reasoning that the RM13.8 billion was not a “spending item” but a “revenue item”, Ariff asked, “Where is the RM13.8 billion previously collected by SST gone to? It hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s in the system.”
He also questioned the “basic maths” behind the GST, calling the deduction a “misleading argument”.
He wrote, “No, we don’t lose any money. We do not take RM13.8 billion from our revenue and pay it to somewhere else. The money is there.”
Being blunt, Ariff said, “The government must take us for fools. Whoever did the maths should be sacked immediately confirming my personal view that those who entered government service are intellectual gnomes.”
Reiterating that the tax revenue not collected by SST was now collected by GST, Ariff cautioned, “Let us warn the government, don’t steal this RM13.8 billion.”
