DAP queries green projects in Sabah

TGE has not addressed public concerns on status and viability of RM419 million geothermal project.
tge SABAHTAWAU: DAP wants Green Technology, Energy and Water Minister Maximus Ongkili to explain the rationale behind signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two firms on green energy projects in Sabah and the Straits of Malacca.
DAP Sabah is taking exception to the MOU saying that Green Power Solutions (GPS) Sdn Bhd, one of the signatories, is “an expert in water related renewable energy projects in Sabah”. The other signatory is Massachusetts-based Current to Current (C2C) International, a GPS-linked company.
“What are the linkages since Ramzi Raad, a Lebanese who is GPS company chairman and CEO, is also involved in a geothermal power plant project in Tawau?” asked DAP Sabah Vice Chairman Chan Foong Hin in a statement.
“Maximus should make public the track record of GPS.”
He noted that Tawau Green Energy (TGE), the company which Ramzi heads as CEO, has yet to address public concerns on the status and viability of the RM419 million geothermal project in Tawau and allegations of flash floods caused by logging at the site.
“The Chief Minister of Sabah has answered in the Sabah Assembly that TGE does not have any experience in geothermal energy,” said Chan who is also Sri Tanjung Assemblyman.
TGE, according to Chan, obtained a RM40 million Federal grant to build an access road to the geothermal project site. The Federal Government has also signed a 21-year Renewable Energy Purchasing Agreement with TGE, he added.
The MoU with Green Power Solutions (GPS) Sdn Bhd and Current to Current (C2C) International, notes DAP Sabah, was to “explore the possibilities of ocean renewable energy, particularly three sites which have been identified as potential viable sites, the waters between Labuan and Kuala Penyu, as well as Banggi and Kudat and another along the Straits of Malacca”.
