Malaysia's controversial Home Minister Zahid Hamidi, who a day ago whipped up racial anger by calling the minority non-Malays in the country "arrogant" and locking up scores of civilian anti-crime volunteers in Penang, has come under fire for his own lavish style and yes ... 'arrogance'.
Chegubard, the pen-name of an Opposition politician Badrul Hisham Shahrin, has challenged the minister, who is an Umno vice president, come clean on his watch collection, supposedly worth RM1.5 million.
"It is a lot of money, yes YB Datuk Seri Dr? The new 5 watches and more pictures of the Honorable Dr appearing with different watches. I'm sure there must be dozens more luxury watches in the collection? Sow how much would the collection be worth? Were they gifts and from whom? What kind of transactions would attract such luxury gifts?" Chegubard said in his blog posting titled Surat terbuka : Datuk Zahid benarkah nilai 5 jam tangan kamu sahaja mencecah RM1.5j?
If true, then Zahid is set to become as notorious as Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife, who is known for her collection of super-expensive Birkin bags and legendary shopping sprees.
Malaysia Chronicle has not been able to contact Zahid for his response but if the allegations are true, then Zahid will come under the spotlight on where he obtained the money to finance such luxury. A Cabinet minister in Malaysia does not earn sufficiently to buy watches in the price range revealed by Chegubard at whim and certainly not enough to form a collection.
According to Chegubard, a self-professed watch aficionado, the five pictures were sourced from various news agencies and he then identified the watches and their price lists.

If Zahid had stuck with Anwar, would he have been able to enjoy such a collection of luxury?
Chegubard, who is a member of the PKR party led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, also took a swipe at Zahid who has faced previous accusations over his penchant for the 'soft life'.
"If it is true (the collection of watches are Zahid's), then I remember the story of how YB Datuk Seri became the commander of YB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's political camp during the early days of his sacking and after being incarcerated under the ISA, YB Datuk Seri had softened and U-turned back to Umno. If you hadn't buckled to pressure and U-turned, I would definitely have missed out on writing about this luxurious collection displayed YB Datuk Seri," Chegubard said.
In his post, Cheguabard also took Zahid to task for not controlling his 'imperious' convoy of bodyguards - one of whom allegedly kicked at several vehicles blocking the minister's way during a traffic jam along the Jalan Tun Razak road.
"On August 29 (Friday) and at 1:13 pm, Jalan Tun Razak was very crowded and police sirens could be heard forcing cars to cram to one side because of a Minister who uses a black Velfire with number plate HM 38. There was no space for cars to move to the left or right or to the front. But the minister's imperious convoy wanted to pass quickly and a motorcycle bodyguard directed big powerful kicks at several vehicles, including the vehicle I was riding. This is kinda debatable, i mean you don't know for sure if there must be dozens more luxury watches in the collection, as a a self-professed watch aficionado
