WE WANT AZIZAH! NGOs and village chiefs express support for PKR chief to be MB
Nearly 50 NGO leaders and various village chiefs from Selangor today gathered at the PKR headquarters in order to lend their support for PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to become the new Selangor menteri besar.
The pro-PKR village chiefs and NGO leaders represented some 20 NGOs and 22 village chief representatives, and stressed that Wan Azizah is the best candidate for the post because she has high qualifications and has majority support in the state assembly.
Islamic Trade of Malaysia organisation chairperson Mat Ghazali Abdul Rakim said that the Kajang assemblyperson clearly fulfilled the state laws’ requirements to become a MB.
“We champion the constitutional monarchy system and the democracy system in Malaysia as provided for in the federal constitution and the state enactments,” he said.
“The conventional concept in a democracy to form a government must be adhered to, that any assemblyperson who garners a majority in the state assembly must be appointed as MB and with the sultan’s consent,” he added.
PKR and DAP had so far only submitted Wan Azizah’s name as MB candidate as she had gathered the majority support, but the state ruler had insisted of getting more names to be considered.
Ghazali said that Wan Azizah  will become an excellent MB because she had been party president for 16 years since 1999, longer than PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Umno president Najib Abdul Razak.
Meanwhile, PKR leader Yahya Shaari, who was also present, said that even though the Selangor sultan has powers to choose an MB, NGOs and grassroots leaders still have the right to support their own choice.
However, he conceded that they would have to cede to the palace’s choice at the end of the day.
“Whoever the palace appoints, the people of Selangor will support,” he said. -M'kini
