Peaceful demonstration by villagers on Sun to protest illegal logging activities in their communal forest.
KUCHING: Villagers of Kampung Semadang at the 38 km Jalan Puncak Borneo near here have vowed to prevent any vehicle or machinery from a logging company passing through a newly built road and encroaching into their land.
The 2.5 km Kampung Semadang-Kampung Danu Road was built on land allegedly seized from the villagers without any compensation in return.
“The village’s development and security committee and the villagers unanimously agreed to protest any form of illegal logging in the forest,” said village chief, Samson Mangang after a meeting.
He was commenting on a peaceful demonstration held by the villagers on Sunday to protest illegal logging activities in their communal forest and the use of their road by a logging company to move machineries and transport logs.
He said that two of the logging company’s machineries were seen entering the intended logging area on Friday, by the newly built road.
“The road is built for the convenience of the villagers and not to be used for carrying out logging activities,” said Samson.
