Very little legal means to get Alvin back

Wan Junaidi says there is little legal room to get sex blogger Alvin Tan back to face sedition charges in Malaysia.
alvin tan3PETALING JAYA: Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Wan Junaidi said Malaysia had yet to receive any documentary proof that sex blogger Alvin Tan was seeking political asylum in the United States.
“If he really is in the US, then let him be, as there is very little the Malaysian government can do to bring him back and prosecute him for sedition,” Wan Junaidi said.
He also doubted Tan would be granted political asylum in the US because he would have to prove to American authorities that he was politically persecuted back here in Malaysia,” Wan Junaidi explained.
“If he does not (get political asylum), then he will have to face the US legal system against illegal immigrants,” Wan Junaidi added.
On the question if Malaysian authorities could get Tan back to Malaysia, Wan Junaidi said it could only be done via legal means.
He explained that for an extradition to be enforced, “…what was considered a crime in Malaysia must also be considered a crime in the US”, failing which the request for extradition would be turned down.
Wan Junaidi was also of the opinion that the US would most likely protect Tan as they were generally sympathetic to the plight of refugees, a term Tan is now referring to himself as.
