KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s strong desire to participate more meaningfully in world affairs is the driving factor behind its motivation to secure a spot in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The prime minister said this ahead of a speech he would deliver at the General Debate of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly today in New York.
“I will also seek for Malaysia's spot as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Malaysia’s strong desire to participate more meaningfully in world affairs is the driving factor behind our motivation to secure a spot in the Security Council,” said Najib in a Facebook posting that also included a photo of when he addressed the UN General Assembly’s annual high-level debate.
The Security Council’s five permanent members are China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and France.
Non-permanent members are Argentina, Australia, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Nigeria, Republic of Korea and Rwanda.
The presidency of the Security Council rotates monthly among council members.
Malaysia became a member of the UNSC three times in the 1964/1965, 1989/1990 and 1999/2000 terms. -NST
